- I DO NOT WORK FOR FREE. (this includes potential payment down the line)
- All images sent will be heavily watermarked until payment is received.

Cheers!

Back Painting. ^_^

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 24, 2011, 8:37 AM

Well I'm done with the sketching spree, learned plenty and intend to keep it up. But I've missed painting stuff. So I'll be doing a more balanced half and half if I can manage that from now on. Just uploaded my first painting since the hiatus, hopefully the first of plenty more to come in the near future.

Still updating my inspiration blog regularly if anyone wants to see some depressingly good paintings head on over to painthole.tumblr.com/

So as my dedication to study continues to grow I've all but stopped painting in order to get back to basics. Penicls and charcoal FTW. I'll Probably get back painting in a week or two.. or three. Hopefully more adeptly than ever before.

ANYWAY! in order to get through my lack of painting phase I've started gathering all my inspirational artists/paintings on a Tumblr. I still don't get tumblr to be honest. But its working out quite nicely to dump all my favourite stuff, perhaps it could become some of your favourite stuff too..

Have a look! --> painthole.tumblr.com/

New Avatar (my own, not camerons)

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 28, 2011, 12:17 PM

Look at my new avatar!, LOOK!

Yeah. I know, not really journal worthy, but getting a smooth edge on a circle/triangle in a transparent animated GIF is harder than you think, harder than I thought anyway. So what would of been a casual avatar update  - requiring no journal announcement - became a 2 hour frustration fest until I figured it out. I was so happy to solve the issue I felt the need to write about it. So there. Please shower me with congratulations.

Bibidy babidy boo, DD's and Groups too.

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 12, 2011, 5:22 AM

So I finally got round to cleaning my messy activities box a few days ago, then the next morning I got a DD which really messed up the whole thing ten fold. Not that I'm complaining, actually while I'm on that, thanks to suzaku009 for the suggestion and gentlemandeerlord for.. answering the suggestion favorably?.

Anyway, whilst cleaning out the activity messages again yesterday and today I came to ponder a few things

Firstly HOW do these DD's work? I get that people (anyone?) suggests them to a moderator or something, but does a piece require multiple suggestions? or is it just up to the mod? do they even need any suggestions at all?

Secondly, GROUPS!, I can't remember why I started joining groups.. I guess I wanted some crits or feedback, or to meet other artists who's stuff I like, but I don't know if that's happening, and I dislike 99% of the deviations the groups show me, so I don't think its worth the hassle of submitting images to them anymore, in fact the time spent submitting to the right folders in groups is probably much better spent just drawing and painting, thus I think I'm going to kick the groups thing to the kerb, unless somebody has reasons to keep in them?

I'm still not painting much atm, still getting back into pencils and ink. So replies from me may take a small eternity =)

Also thanks to everyone for the comments and stuff after the DD, too many to respond to so I just replied to questions mostly.

So FINALLY I got my website/portfolio up.. ---> nickgrey.com/ let me know if there's any glaring errors..

I'm also finally back using a pencil (which is why I haven't been posting much of late) just to solve some basic issues with my work which I think I must have skipped whilst learning to draw some years ago.
My problem is just.. frustration. Improving your work is such a painfully slow process that its sometimes impossible to see any improvements. Which is depressing to say the least. Just hoping when a future version of myself looks back on what I'm currently doing he'll be happy to see a vast gap in quality.. I ope.

Journal Entry: Sat Oct 16, 2010, 2:22 PM

I have a blog now. So there.

GO here, enjoy and follow me or something --> du1l.blogspot.com/

Its for sketches and studies of which there are 3 up currently, process shots, tutorials (when I get to them). and it finally gives me a good platform to give out about shit which I wish to give out about.

It will be linked to my upcoming website which will have plenty of finished work and schtuff, that site should be up in a week, I ope.

In other news my lovely chum FuzzleFire :iconfuzzlefire: Is studying away at art school currently and could probably do with some of your lovely cash, and coincidentally you could probably do with some of her lovely art stuffs in your gaff. So why not commission her for some goods. I think she details payment shtuff here fuzzlefire.deviantart.com/jour…

Lovely.

FRUSTRATION. (with the skeletons in my closet)

Journal Entry: Thu May 20, 2010, 10:33 AM

Yup, really f**kin frustrated. Did a commission way outside my comfort zone recently, and I hate the end result. I refuse to start over again and the issue with it can't be fixed, because the issue here is one I've been putting off dealing with for quite some time. Stuff I suck at.

Namely COMPOSITION, PERSPECTIVE DEPTH, MECHANICAL STUFF. (amongst several other things, but primarily these)

I've known I suck at these things for ... well forever. But I always just sort of skirt around them. Moving the frame around my character to make it look composed. Leaving out backgrounds and having a quasi sense of depth via blurs or slight foreshortening. And barely touching mechanical stuff, unless its simple under detailed shapes.

So, no more. Time to get my act together and stop 'practicing' things I'm comfortable doing. Onwards to more awkward and difficult shores. I intend to suffer for the next few months churning out garbage, garbage I'l be learning from hopefully. Been putting this stuff off for too long, so wish me luck. Might put up some successful tests if they appear >.< oih

If anyone knows of any good work groups or the like let me know, would be interested in joining.

RIP Frank Frazetta

Journal Entry: Mon May 10, 2010, 5:55 PM

Man, I couldn't believe this today. Without his influence I doubt I'd be doing what I do, or if the concept art industry would be half of what it is today. He will be missed, but his work will hopefully go on to inspire for years to come.

As a friend said earlier today, at least heaven will have plenty more babes and battle axes to go around.

Anatomy and Pyramid Head.

Journal Entry: Sat May 8, 2010, 1:39 PM

Right then!, currently starting the last of the portraits, its been an interesting experiment.. But I'm getting a little sick of all of your poxxy faces!
Really looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into something more creative with my (currently half finished) phead fan piece. Its going to be thee old classic version not the new pointy and slick film version. The new guy has his charms and all, but its just a bit overkill'ish, I mean you can take any iconic villain and make their weapon bigger, their bodies taller, more muscular, make their clothes out of like human skin, and sure enough, they are more bad ass, but the uniqueness is diminished. I like me a little finesse, cant just go and make everything bigger cooler and more evil. Anyway yea, expect the good old fashioned small, weird, bucket headed triangle man that initially won over our hearts. =p

In other news, I finally splashed out on one of anatomy tools (www.freedomofteach.com/) figures, and man its awesome. Can't wait til I have occasion to use it (hence my impatience to finish the bloody portraits). Definitely recommend them, pretty much a work or art in their own right.

Other than that happy mothers day to you american mothers or whatever.

Hey people. My on going studies into artishness continue, to aid me in my endeavours, I will be practicing much real life figure, landscape, and portrait work in the coming months. As such I've decided why look up models all about the place when I could just ask a bunch of people who might even like a portrait done, if they would send me or link me to a pic of themselves. I'l paint them up and post them here and send you on a high res version if you wish.

I don't know how many interested parties I'l get so I can't say 100% that I'l get 1 of everyone done. But I'l give it a damn good try.

You can drop me the link to the pic here

Or email it to me at  - Nicholas .d. grey @ gmail . com  (no spaces, obviously)

I'd like head and shoulders only please, no full body pics, etc, think passport photo type layout, although expressions and different angles welcome.

See my (oldish) self portrait du1l.deviantart.com/art/Self-P… to show you the kind of finish you can expect.

Yey.
